In the spirit of upholding the concept of open source we’ve decided to show you where and how you can find these patents for yourself! On June 12th an amazingly intelligent and caring billionaire CEO, Elon Musk, announced that he and Tesla Motors had come to a decision of making all of their electric car patents open source. The announcement, named “All Our Patent Are Belong To You“, is a testament to the culture of internet citizens and a world culture representative of changing times, sharing technological advancement to the public rather than withholding the knowledge and information to build a better future.
Tesla Motors was created to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport. If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal. Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology.
The Patent Search Blog posted a few links to lead us directly to many of the patents, citing 373 US patent applications, 168 granted US patents and 8 US design patents. On a google patent search we found 808 search results when inputting the function inassignee: Tesla Motors, Inc. Using the searches in these multiple links you can then use the website www.pat2pdf.org to download pdf files of each patent to archive for study and later use.
This move is bold for a company like Tesla Motors, even for an average gasoline car manufacturer to freely share the secrets of their technologies is unprecedented, yet the Tesla model S has achieved the title of “Safest Car In The World” and can drive a distance of 265 miles before needing to charge. The open sourcing of these patents should initiate a societal revolution, allowing many more electrical engineers to improve on these technologies without the fear of being sued.
