This futuristic spacecraft looking car turned heads when Mercedez drove the F 015 Luxury in Motion through the streets of San Francisco earlier this month. The car doesn’t only look futuristic though, it can also drive itself along with 4 passengers.
The car is 5.22 meters long, more than 2 meters wide, and more than 1.5 meters high, with an arched roofline to give more headroom. Mercedes pushed the wheels out to give the maximum wheelbase possible, at 3.6 meters, which is actually wider than the Mercedes Maybach.
The custom silver paintwork looks like liquid mercury, particularly how it seamlessly blends into the glass. A common theme of different sized dots is carried through the design, inside and out, blending the transition between different materials like metal, glass, wood and leather.
On the inside, there are screens in pretty much every direction. The dashboard is one big display, and each door has a 4K touchscreen embedded. A fifth 4K panel is in the rear bulkhead, and there is another touchscreen built into the motorized center tray that slides out from between the rear seats. Each of the screens is powered by a separate MacBook, which Mercedes engineers say were selected for their capabilities at driving high-resolution displays.

The custom interface itself is written in Qt, with a custom multi-display implementation that links all of the individual panels together and allows for graphics to slide between them seamlessly.
The steering wheel is mounted on what looks like an extending robotic arm, and the foot pedals even match the floor.
The car also includes eye-tracking and gesture-navigated dashboard control.
Currently, the F 015 Luxury in Motion is a prototype car, but it still allows us a look at what travel could be like in the not so distant future.
