Despite how much people have become sucked into the digital world with podcasts, digital books, streaming services, and gaming, libraries are still holding their ground. According to a 2019 Gallup poll, the first of its kind, Americans visited the library significantly more than any other cultural institution.
Justin McCarthy, the Poll’s author, said:
Libraries have endured as a place Americans visit nearly monthly on average.
The Poll shows that on average visits to the library exceeded any other recreational activities, with American adults reporting:
- 10.5 trips to the library per year.
- Five annual trips to the movie theater.
- Five trips to sporting events per year.
- Four yearly trips to theatrical or musical performances.
- 2.5 visits to museums per year.
These numbers are similar to the 2001 data that was collected. However, in 2019 Americans reported going slightly more to national parks (1.3 visits), musical or theatrical performance (1.1 visits), and museums (0.7 trips) while movie theaters saw a 1.3 decrease in visits.
The data also reveals that the majority of visitors at the public libraries are young adults and low-income individuals, rather than higher-income families. This is most likely true because most library services are free. Additionally, the survey reported that women visit the library more than men do, with 13.4 to 7.5 visits.
McCarthy explained:
Whether because they offer services like free Wi-Fi, movie rentals, or activities for children, libraries are most utilized by young adults, women, and residents of low-income households.
The Poll’s reporters say the survey is cause for celebration amid a technologically saturated time. The library is known for its comfortable quiet space where people go to learn, look at photos or study. Check out the images below of some stunning libraries around the world.
