Legendary Designer Shiro Nakamura Unveils an Electric Masterpiece: AIM EV Sport 01

Laying eyes upon the AIM EV Sport 01, one can only marvel at its elegant simplicity. This concept car is a breath of fresh air in the automotive world. The AIM Corporation, a Japanese automotive engineering consultancy, played a significant role in bringing it to life. However, the underlying masterpiece comes from the creative genius himself, Shiro Nakamura. Even in retirement, Nakamura’s passion remains ignited; he loves to explore exciting projects through his own company, SN Platform.

Nakamura was the driving force behind Nissan’s rejuvenation under Carlos Ghosn. His repertoire extends from prominent manufacturers like Nissan, Infiniti, and Datsun to globally acclaimed names like General Motors. His most renowned designs encompass several distinguished sports cars, notably the Nissan Z-Series models (including the 350Z and 370Z) and the everlasting Nissan GT-R. He can be credited for democratizing high-performance sports cars straight off the showroom floor, especially for those bereft of deep pockets.

Yukinori Suzuki, AIM’s President and CEO, cherishes a personal friendship with Nakamura. Both attended the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, which helped to inspire the idea behind the AIM EV Sport 01. “The vision for the AIM EV Sport 01 was fast, and enjoyable to drive. While the mainstream trend for EVs is AWD, the temperament of this car suggested a RWD configuration,” asserted Suzuki. He also noted that their unique series of advanced electric motors made AIM EV Sport 01 the ultimate testament to their proficiency in advanced powertrain development.

This week, Suzuki plans to test drive the EV Sport 01 on the renowned Goodwood Hill, featuring at the Festival of Speed.

The Nissan GT-R has been in high demand for over a decade, clocking more than 10,000 units annually. Its enduring nickname, “Godzilla,” still dictates reverence and relevance, given its immense popularity among performance car enthusiasts worldwide. Nakamura’s contribution to this phenomenon is momentous, specifically because the AIM EV Sport 01 doesn’t tread the routine path of ignoring quality for sheer size—which most aspiring supercar builders do when embracing electrical energy.

It appears that automakers contend that 1,000 hp is desirable for every driver, even though such power calls for tremendous weight, massive battery capacities, and strenuous robustness for each component. This compromises handling and requires more powerful brakes and suspension. Moreover, this amount of energy can be overwhelming for average drivers, making its management taxing.

Nakamura offers a solution, using dual electric motors for a manageable surge of intense horsepower. By incorporating software and torque vectoring, even an average driver can handle the vehicle with ease and finesse.

This is a much more pragmatic approach compared to the fleet of 1,000-hp supercars competing for a tiny market share. Instead, the average sports car enthusiast can transition to the AIM EV Sport 01.

“Designing sports cars is a sophisticated harmony of packaging, performance, and style,” Nakamura explained. “Opting for a RWD configuration enabled us to create a minimalist, clean design, evoking sophistication and dynamism. With the EV Sport 01, we were inspired by the timeless Japanese and European sports cars of the 1960s, making its debut at Goodwood truly fitting,” he added.

Since its unveiling at the Japanese Auto Council in April, the AIM EV Sport 01 has garnered immense interest. This has prompted AIM to undertake a study for a limited production series. In its pursuit of innovation, AIM continues to invest in its powertrain systems for tailor-made cars in the future.
