According to the World Bank, approximately 840 million people currently live without electricity worldwide. This figure motivated Colombian renewable energy start-up E-Dina to developed a cordless light, called WaterLight, that converts salt water into electricity.
The portable device only needs to be filled with half a liter of seawater– or urine in emergencies – to emit 45 days of light. WaterLight was designed to be used as a more reliable alternative to solar lamps in off-grid communities.
How Does It Work?
WaterLight works via a chemical process called ionization, in which electrical energy is generated when electrolytes in saltwater respond to contact with magnesium within the device. Acting as a mini power generator, the WaterLight also charges small devices such as a mobile phone via its integrated USB port.
E-Dina was inspired to make the device after seeing the current situation in a Colombian indigenous community called Wayuu, located in the department of La Guajira. Wayuu is entirely isolated; it’s surrounded by the sea and doesn’t have access to electricity. WaterLight can help the area and its inhabitants use ocean water to improve their quality of life.
The WaterLight device is waterproof, made from recycled material, and has a lifespan of about 5,600 hours, equivalent to a few years of use. In addition, the device features symbols of indigenous communities, and the colorful strap is handmade by native artisans from La Guajira.

WaterLight demonstrates how creativity and humanity can lead to a truly innovative idea, which has the potential to transform the lives of millions of people.
Eventually, the company hopes to join forces with local and foreign governments to provide “a little light” to various parts of the planet with their novel device.
Earlier this year, we saw another innovative light, dubbed ‘Solar Desalination Skylight,’ that provides free lighting and makes seawater drinkable. Designer Henry Glogau developed this no-cost lighting solution for homes in shantytowns.
