Today, from the bright lights of the Las Vegas strip to the sea air of the Atlantic City boardwalk, America can offer real-life casinos that rival natural attractions and historic landmarks for visitor numbers.
Why are casinos such popular attractions?
These classic brick-and-mortar casinos are seen as exciting, glamorous venues in the United States. Amid their glossy, exciting atmosphere, they offer a wide variety of games, shows, entertainment, food, and drink.
Many visitors are attracted by the lure of gambling thrills and the chance to walk away as a big winner. There’s always a thrill about stepping into the gaming room at any casino.
But many more who may have no idea about a poker bonus or the different types of roulette wheels are simply attracted by the buzz. The casino’s design, style, and atmosphere are attractions in their own right.

This appeal shows no sign of diminishing. Interestingly the latest figures show the average of visitors to casinos is decreasing – the average American casino-goer is now just 43 years old.
How big is the American gaming world?
The American gaming market grew to record levels in the last year. The turnover of more than $50 billion dwarfed previous years’ revenue.
It helped generate an enormous $11.69 billion in direct gaming tax revenues across the US in 2021. There are also income and sales taxes in addition to that figure.
Some of the rise may seem more impressive because of a slump during the pandemic. Nevertheless, the rise in income continues to be reported across the gaming world, including sports betting, online gaming, and real-life casinos.
How does this relate to iGaming?
The rapidly rising fortunes of the online gaming market in the US have somewhat overshadowed the successes of the land-based casino industry. Online casinos have quickly grown as remote access, player numbers, and revenues soar.
Many states have restrictive laws in place covering gambling, but there is now increasing pressure to liberalize these. By 2024, nine states will have regulated online casinos in their territories, including New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, Illinois, West Virginia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.
That comes from two sources: the rising demand of internet gamers, whether phone or computer users – and the state authorities themselves, who realize the enormous tax revenues available from a legalized gaming industry.

At first, most American states made gambling illegal. Casinos were only permitted in Nevada and then, later, in New Jersey.
Gradually other states started allowing them to copy the financial successes of Las Vegas and Atlantic City. By the 1990s, casinos had been legalized in around half the US states.
At the same time, the Nevada and New Jersey hotspots invested heavily to maintain their appeal; huge luxury hotels, restaurants, and landmark attractions were added.
The casinos became resorts in their own right, offering spas and shopping malls to entertain their never-ending stream of visitors.
The outcome of this expansion is that Nevada attracts over 40 million tourists annually and brings in $10 billion in gambling revenue.
The tax revenues from Las Vegas demonstrate the importance of casino tourism to the state coffers. The gambling city contributes $6 billion in tax revenues annually.
It contributes to the local economy in other ways too. The casino city employs over 100,000 in hotel jobs and more than 160,000 in gaming roles.
The casinos are the headline attractions, but the vast number of visitors helps generate healthy business for many shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants. House values have risen in the city, making all the residents comparatively better off than in a similar-sized non-gambling attraction.
Casino tourism – the future
Considering the casino industry has faced a constant stream of hostility and criticism since it began, it is a significant contributor to society through its enormous finances.
It can be a positive impact on the communities where it is based. Casinos have benefitted the surrounding social environments, from job opportunities to leisure facilities.
Industry experts see no reason for this not to continue. The increased internet exposure has introduced more players to the games offered.
The casino attractions have invested wisely to broaden their appeal. And more leisure time across society surely means more and more people will have spare time – and they will use it to visit a casino resort.
