What can other provinces in Canada learn from Ontario’s decision to further regulate iGaming?

Date:

Canada’s province of Ontario is one of the country’s most populous regions, with approximately 15 million residents. Therefore, it should be far from a surprise that so many eyes will be firmly fixed on the region, especially when it boasts major cities including Ottawa and Toronto!

Naturally, there will be many of the other provinces that will be looking at the area as a possible case study from which they can look to learn from regarding a variety of different things, including things such as tax generation and improvement to things such as public services and other community services and initiatives that could help to make the entire country improve, let alone improve the region within its own borders.

Ontario’s decision to further legalize iGaming will make other provinces take notice

There will have been a lot of focus on Ontario recently because of the decision to make amendments to its gambling legislation, with the state deciding to permit players within its borders to enjoy a greater experience when it comes to participating in online betting.

Gamers are now able to enjoy the very best experiences as they can actively participate in legal single-game sports betting since the iGaming market went live on April 4, 2022. This will undoubtedly have attracted a lot of interest and it would not have been a surprise if other provincial governments were to take a keen interest in the results, either.

Ontario has a long history of gambling

Like many other provinces in Canada, Ontario has also been involved with gambling activities for decades – starting from charitable lotteries and bingo halls to private casinos and online gambling sites.

However, over the years, more and more Canadians became increasingly interested in gambling. This led the provincial government to act by imposing stricter regulations on gambling – while simultaneously legalizing it completely.

Ontario, Canada

The first move towards this goal was made in 2012 when the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) was established. The OLG is a Crown corporation that is responsible for the operation of all legal gambling activities in the province, including online gambling. It is also tasked with ensuring that all gambling is conducted in a fair and responsible manner.

In the years since its establishment, the OLG has made several changes to the way gambling is conducted in Ontario. For example, it has introduced new measures to help prevent problem gambling, such as setting limits on how much money can be spent on gambling activities each day. It has also worked to make sure that all forms of gambling are accessible only to those who are of legal age.

As mentioned previously, Ontario has also subsequently decided to implement further legislation that has seemingly given punters in the region the opportunity to enhance their wagering experiences further, and it will be a decision many will be keen to see the results of.

Indeed, the new legislation to have been introduced means there are a number of Ontario licensed online casinos available to use within the province, with each of these providing those who decide to use the platforms that have managed to obtain a license with the opportunity to earn a greater level of protection.

These protections will ultimately mean punters would no longer have to use offshore casinos and would be able to enjoy the benefits that being protected by their own province would provide. These advantages can range from proper levels of customer support, and limits on transactions being made, as well as being able to use Canadian dollars instead of having to potentially lose out because they had to exchange it for a currency that was accepted.

Other provinces could certainly benefit

Given the success of these changes and the positive impact that they have had on the gambling landscape in Ontario, other Canadian provinces may be able to learn from their experiences. By imposing similar restrictions on their own gambling activities, provinces like Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta, and Manitoba could go a long way toward reducing some of the problems related to gambling that have been witnessed in Canada in previous years.

Furthermore, it could help each province to generate some much-needed revenues at a time when it could be argued new streams of revenue are required. Many regions are still feeling the impact of the global economic crisis that was experienced over the last couple of years, and whilst there have been a number of positive moments and successful attempts to rebound, there is no denying that the legalization of online gambling could have a greater impact in helping to replenish the coffers.

Canadian money

The quicker that a province does this, the quicker they could then experience certain other improvements where they could perhaps look to be as enterprising as possible. For instance, they could use the money that is generated to create new jobs within the region, or they could look to improve certain aspects of the community. In turn, this could help to drive tourism to the area, thus allowing them to generate even more income from tourists.

At the same time, however, it is also important for provinces to ensure that they do not take a particularly heavy-handed approach when implementing regulations – as this could end up having a negative effect by driving people towards illegal forms of gambling such as black market websites. Instead, they should work closely with organizations like the OLG in order to find the best possible solutions for each province.

Final Thoughts

Overall, it is clear that Ontario’s experience with gambling legalization can provide valuable lessons for other provinces in Canada, and it will be interesting to see how these lessons are applied in the future as more and more provinces begin to consider legalizing gambling activities on a widespread basis.

Whether other provinces will look to follow Ontario’s lead remains to be seen, although it will be impossible not to think that many will be keeping a close eye on every bit of news that is related to the subject in order to see if it is a move worth making.
