Michael Jordan isn’t just a basketball legend, he’s a kindhearted generous human being who cares about the people. Now, thanks to him and his family’s $7 million donation, residents of North Carolina who are uninsured and considered undeserved will soon have two new health care facilities to address their needs.
The six-time NBA champion was at the grand opening of the first of two Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinics, with tears in his eyes of happiness. “This is a very emotional thing for me to be able to give back to a community that has supported me over the years,” he said. When Jordan prepared to cut the ribbon to the new facility, he mentioned that it was “just the start of a battle of being able to touch as many people as we can.”
Jordan told the crowd gathered at the grand opening:
It’s… from the heart.
This clinic is situated in a lower-income section of North Carolina’s largest city – Charlotte. It will provide primary and preventive care to Charlotte residents, even those who are under-insured or uninsured. Jordan is actually a longtime resident of the state and he played collegiate at North Carolina before he got famous with the Chicago Bulls.
Jordan makes it clear that his extended family deserves as much credit as he does for the clinic:
I stand here before you as a proud parent, son, obviously a member of this community. You see my name, but yet you see a lot of people behind me and the commitment, especially from my mom, about caring for other people and being a part of a community that matters.
According to the Charlotte Observer, Jordan’s $7m gift will also be put toward the second medical clinic in an area of Charlotte.
