This New Smoke Detector Can Tell The Difference Between Real Fires And Cooking Mishaps

Date:

There is a new wireless smoke detector on the market that can tell the difference between a cooking mistake versus your house going up in flames. That’s right, this wonderful device has the ability to know if you’ve just burnt your dinner to a crisp or if the problem is something much worse, like your couch on fire.

The company 2GIG is to thank for designing this convenient alarm. They have managed to solve a common problem with an advanced and well-researched solution. All so you could comfortably jump back into the kitchen and experiment away – without having to worry about a fire truck showing up to put out that charred cake you were so looking forward to eating… if only you hadn’t forgotten about it.

New Versus Old

Burnt food

The new 2GIG SMKT3-345 Smoke Freeze Heat Detector uses advanced algorithms and a sophisticated optical chamber to recognize the difference in smoke particles created by synthetic materials. In other words, it knows the difference between stuff (plastics, fabrics) burning, and food (organic material) burning from the smoke itself.

This differs from traditional smoke detectors (an obviously outdated technology) which only identify smoke and trigger an alarm once the density of the smoke has reached a specific level. If the smoke is thick, the alarm goes off, regardless of if there is actually a fire or not.

Bonus Features

Heat And Freeze Detector

The device also monitors and reports on excessive temperatures, as well as unusual changes in temperature. If the ambient temperature exceeds 134 degrees Fahrenheit (56.7 degrees Celsius), the high temperature is sent to the panel and a siren is triggered. If the temperature rises more than 15 degrees or more in one minute, a rate-of-rise temperature is sent to the panel along with a siren warning trigger. Same goes for a drop in temperature. If the ambient temperature drops below 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4.4 degrees Celsius) in a single minute, a freeze warning is sent to the panel along with a siren warning trigger.

Security System Integration

The device can also connect with an associated smart home platform. If you have a 2GIG safety system installed in your home, the new 2GIG Smoke Heat Freeze Detector integrates seamlessly into the larger system. Therefore, the device will also send you mobile phone notifications if the alarm goes off at your home when you aren’t there. At the same time, it will call the fire department for you to ensure the fastest response possible.

Overall Features:

  • A built-in 345MHz RF transmitter designed to send wireless signals to a 2GIG Go! Control alarm system.
  • It is battery-powered with 3 AAA Energizer E92 alkaline batteries or equivalent.
  • It will detect smoke, heat and freeze conditions within a 35-foot radius.
  • Its smoke detection uses photoelectric technology to intelligently sense a fire before it’s too late.
  • Its heat detector uses both fixed temperature and rate-of-rise technologies. The fixed temperature must reach 125°F degrees and stay there for at least 3 minutes, 3 times in a row (9 minutes of consecutive detection sets off the alarm). The rate of temperature rising specifications require a 10-degree increase within 1 minute to set off the alarm.
  • Its freeze detection uses a fixed temperature technology that follows the same protocol as the heat detection. The fixed temperature must drop below 40°F degrees and stay there for at least 3 minutes, 3 times in a row (9 minutes of consecutive detection sets off the alarm).
