Journey Through Time and Space: 3D Visualization Takes Us to the Edge of the Universe

Date:

Imagine embarking on a journey from the Earth to the outer reaches of the known universe, a trip where thought takes formidable form and speed. Thanks to an awe-inspiring 3D visualization platform crafted by the Space Telescope Science Institute, this fantastical voyage is now a reality. Delving into the depths of the cosmos allows us to soar through thousands of galaxies in a span of mere seconds.

In one of the most critical discoveries of last year, the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) program on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) identified one of the most distant galaxies ever observed. Affectionately dubbed ‘Maisie’s Galaxy,’ its light reaches us from a historical time just 390 million years post the Big Bang – the pivotal moment when galaxies first began to form.

The stunning 3D visualization brings to life the journey to Maisie’s Galaxy, offering a velocity of exploration beyond that ever conceived by science fiction writers. Every second within this visual marvel catapults the viewer approximately 200 million years back in time, finally landing at the galaxy roughly 68 seconds into the journey.

Transmuting the visualization into a tangible distance poses a distinct challenge due to the accelerated expansion of the universe. As a consequence, objects farther from us seem to recede faster due to the universal expansion operating in a similar manner and direction everywhere. Hypothetically, if we could instantaneously fly to Maisie’s Galaxy today, we would traverse an astronomical distance exceeding 33 billion light-years.

As the enigmatic physics of our universe and the realities JWST is witnessing continue to intrigue us, we take a momentary respite under a minute and a half to appreciate this astounding excursion into the distant early universe.
