Tesla’s New Solar Roof Cheaper Than A Regular Roof With Solar Panels

Tesla has officially announced the launch of the third iteration of its solar roof tiles for residential home use. Tesla CEO Elon Musk detailed the launch in a blog post and answered some questions about the V3 Solar roof in a media call. Musk plans to ramp production to as many as 1,000 new roofs per week.

Version Three

Tesla’s new solar roof tiles, double as solar panels to generate electricity. They’re designed to look like typical roof tiles when installed on a house.

Three years ago, the company announced the concept, and since then, it has been a work-in-progress. Two different iterations went through trial installations before the company came up with the third iteration, which Musk believes is the winner. “Versions one and two, we were still figuring things out. Version three is finally ready for the big time,” said Musk.

At the start of the launch, there will only be one available look for the Solar Roof. However, as soon as the company can, they plan to provide additional variants such as tiles that look like clay and other creative alternatives.

Tesla’s Solar Roof Prices

Tesla’s Solar Roof website includes a pricing estimator. The price for the average 2,000 square-foot home, with 10kW solar panels, lists as $42,500. It also lists a lower number; after an $8,550 federal tax incentive is deducted, the price is $33,950. Additionally, you can enter your exact location and get an updated estimate that takes into account local costs and incentives.

Musk explained:

The solar-glass roof is not going to make financial sense for somebody who has a relatively new roof, because this is itself a roof, that has integrated solar power generation.

Musk notes that with version 3 of the solar roof the price point is less expensive than an average roof cost, plus the solar panels that would be added on that roof.

Tesla plans to make its solar roof available worldwide. Musk believes the total global addressable market for this product is somewhere around 100 million orders.

Faster Installations

Musk is hiring and training specialized installers first, but ultimately the plan is to expand installations to third-party contractors as well. The Tesla team aims to have an installation time faster than installing standard shingles would take.

Musk said:

We’re doing installations as fast as we possibly can. The goal is to get to 1,000 roofs per week.

Additionally, the tiles and roof installations have a 25-year warranty, which includes their protective weatherization (such as 130 MPH wind resistance) and their capability to generate power.
