Tesla Company CEO Elon Musk announced version 3 of the company’s Solarglass roof is ready to go and they will be hiring for installers across the U.S. Tesla will be hiring Solarglass Roofers, Installers, and Licensed Electricians of all levels to join their field operations team. New hire training along with continued education will be provided and include installation of residential PV solar systems, battery storage, and EV wall connectors.
Version 3 Solarglass Tiles
Tesla has made many improvements including lowering the cost of the tiles, increasing the size and removing the need for on-site cutting, Musk also said they have improved on the aesthetics making the roof more visually appealing. Previous versions of the solar tiles came in sections of 3 that were wired together.
The design for the new version 3 tiles are significantly improved by being 65% bigger in width, eliminating the need to be wired together and increasing their energy output. This will make the tiles easier to install and have fewer internal components. Eliminating the need to cut the tiles on site is also a great thing not just for the installers, but for the overall integrity of the roofs. Cutting of the tiles caused microfractures in the previous versions of Solarglass roofs.
Earlier this year, Musk set a target to be able to produce enough for 1,000 Solarglass roofs per week. He expects this to be a big success which is why he will look to hire and train many installers and technicians to make this a reality.
It has been reported that the first installation of a version 3 Solarglass roof has already taken place in California. Tesla wants this new version to end up costing less than what the average new roof would cost, plus the added benefit of being able to produce electricity for the next 20 plus years. CleanTechnica released a study of the more expensive version 2 Solarglass roofs and found that they were cheaper than the cost of a normal roof.
The production of the version 3 tiles will take place at Tesla’s Gigafactory 2 located in Buffalo, New York. Musk and Tesla expect that for this new version the “Demand will far exceed the supply,” which is why he will look to hire and train many installers and electricians for the upcoming jobs. He is also planning on allowing traditional roofing companies to help with installations.
