Japanese company Yanmar is perhaps best known for its diesel engines and robotic agricultural equipment, however, they also make personal watercraft. The newest addition to the watercrafts category is a very unique vehicle known as the Wheeebo, which is like an aquatic Segway without handles. This exciting new marine activity offers users fun times on the water!
The Wheeebo takes the form of a thick floating disc which the user stands upon. Then, the rider simply shifts their body weight in the direction that they wish to travel, with integrated sensors detecting that shift and causing the electric-motored craft to accelerate, stop or turn accordingly. A propeller mounted under the board moves the disc in the desired direction. Operation is simple and intuitive allowing you to ride from your first day on the water.
The Wheeebo is intended for use in calm conditions and can be used in either salt or fresh water (oceans, seas, lakes, ponds, rivers, pools, canals, etc.). Speed is controlled by a wireless handheld remote. It does not go very fast, topping out at a modest walking-speed of around 3 knots (3.5 mph, or 5.6 km/h), letting the user enjoy the sights of the ocean and the surrounding scenery at their own pace. It does not require a license to ride and can be enjoyed by a wide range of people, from late elementary school age to seniors.
Power is provided by a nickel-hydrogen battery pack that has a lower energy density than the more traditional lithium-ion technology but should offer a greater number of charge cycles. A single charge is good for up to an hour of runtime.
The Wheeebo is due for release in 2020 and will be available in two diameters – 140 and 150 cm/55 and 59 inches – depending on rider weight and intended usage. It is intended to be very easy to use because it is based around the concept that anyone can enjoy exciting new experiences on the water. In a press release, the company states that “the Wheeebo expands upon Yanmar’s long commitment to delivering excitement in the realm of recreational marine and enriching people’s lives through providing rich and fulfilling experiences.”
