In Roman times, the pirates used the Greek island of Astypalea as a regular base of operations. It was then conquered by several different races, including the Venetians, the Germans, the Italians, the Turks until it was finally united to the Greek State in 1948.
Astypalaia is a small but lovely typical Greek island covered in white and blue. It has only a few inhabitants, about 1,334, most of who deal with agriculture, fishing, and tourism. Now, the island will be the site of a new major investment enterprise, led by the Volkswagen (VW) corporation.
VW officials and Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis plan to bring clean energy and electric cars to the island’s inhabitants as part of their eco-friendly project. Their goal is to turn Astypalaia into an energy-independent “green” island.

The investment includes building a massive network of charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs) across the entire island and testing VW’s range of electric cars, trucks, and buses on the roads.
The Greek government supports the investment, as it aims to increase EVs in the country. Greece has moved towards renewable energy sources for quite some time. Now, it’s a renewable energy leader in Europe, with green energy sources such as solar power and wind farms covering a significant portion of the country’s electricity needs.
