Earlier this year, Nespresso collaborated with a Swedish lifestyle bike brand Vélosophy to produce a stylish bicycle made from recycled aluminum coffee capsules. That was not the first time the company has collaborated with a company to produce a high-quality, well-designed product using recycled coffee capsules. Last year it joined forces with the Swiss writing and drawing instruments company Caran d’Ache to produce a gorgeous pen out of the capsules.

They want to show the world that upcycling can result in a very classy, desirable item. Now, they’ve completed another project, again with Caran d’Ache, to produce a second limited edition pen, of course, out of recycled coffee capsules. All these products are a perfect balance of sustainability and style, designed to illustrate the potential of recyclable aluminum and motivate Nespresso fans to recycle their capsules.

The bike is special because you don’t create any emissions getting from A to B. The pen is special because it’s reusable and part of a circular economy. The problem with the typical ballpoint pen is that it is usually made from non-biodegradable plastics and it runs out of ink pretty quickly so you can imagine how many of them are in the landfills and oceans! That is what inspired this collaboration in the first place. Nespresso decided to partner with Caran d’Ache to make a pen that didn’t need to be thrown away and to make it from something that wouldn’t go to landfill because of it!

The great thing about Nespresso’s coffee capsules is that they are made of aluminum. Aluminum is one of the world’s most valuable resources because it can be re-melted and reused infinitely. The fact that the material doesn’t lose quality allowing craftsmen to give waste a second life over and over again.

The first limited edition 849 Nespresso pen was presented in the satin midnight blue of Dharkan to celebrate one of the most popular coffees from Nespresso’s permanent range. This new second edition has been made out of discarded Nespresso Master origins India capsules and is a shade of matt deep green. The idea is that these pens should remind people how the capsules can come back to life as another useful thing if they remember to recycle them! Each pen comes ready with a Goliath ink cartridge which lasts for roughly 600 A4 sheets.
Jean-Marc Duvoisin, CEO of Nespresso, said:
We’re delighted to be partnering once again with Caran d’Ache and bringing consumers this unique object, a true celebration of the infinite recyclability of aluminium. When consumers recycle with Nespresso, their capsule continues its journey. We believe this special collaboration gives coffee lovers something to write home about.
Carole Hubscher, Caran d’Ache’s President, said:
We are pleased to write the second chapter of this collaboration with Nespresso after the unprecedented success of our first partnership. It is very encouraging to see our consumers positively responding to design innovations founded on sustainable development, a value that Caran d’Ache has held dear since 1915.

So don’t forget to recycle your Nespresso aluminum capsules! The coffee company has a recycling scheme spread worldwide. It’s available in more than 53 countries and gives coffee-lovers a range of options for convenient recycling of their used capsules, from a network of more than 100,000 drop-off points to door-step collections and mail-back schemes.
