Nespresso has partnered with Swedish lifestyle bike brand Vélosophy to produce a stylish bicycle made from recycled aluminum coffee capsules. The pair have joined forces because now more than ever before, consumers are looking to make sustainable choices in their daily lives and a bike made from recycled coffee pods is eco-friendly on multiple levels.
Part of being able to make sustainable choices involves understanding the origin of a product and its impact on the world – two factors which are crucial to even being able to make a good or bad choice in the first place. The new bicycle – cleverly called RE:CYCLE – is a perfect balance of sustainability and style, designed to illustrate the potential of recyclable aluminum and motivate Nespresso fans to recycle their capsules. And of course, it doesn’t create any carbon emissions when being used to get from one place to the next!

The great thing about the Nespresso’s coffee capsules is that they are made of aluminum. Aluminum is one of the world’s most valuable resources because it can be re-melted and reused infinitely. The fact that the material doesn’t lose quality allowing craftsmen to give waste a second life over and over again. The launch of RE:CYCLE is to be an example item that highlights the potential of recycling Nespresso’s aluminum capsules, encouraging consumers to consider how they can make a positive impact if they remember to recycle their capsules.
Jean-Marc Duvoisin, CEO of Nespresso, said:
Through our collaboration with Vélosophy, we’re illustrating to coffee lovers the potential of recycling their aluminum Nespresso capsules. By using recycled capsules to make beautiful bicycles, Vélosophy bring sustainability and style together to create a truly meaningful experience, bringing to life the importance of recycling. We have been inspired by working with Vélosophy, and I hope the RE:CYCLE bicycle inspires people to recycle.
Jimmy Östholm, CEO and Founder of Vélosophy said:
We created Vélosophy with a clear purpose: to have a positive impact on the world. This purpose drives everything we do, from our promise to give a bike to a schoolgirl for every Vélosophy we sell, to producing our stylish city bikes from recycled aluminum. I see in Nespresso a strong commitment to sustainability, which is why this has been the dream partnership. We are proud to have co-created a bike that takes on the future. It is beautifully designed, responsibly sourced and sustainably produced.
The limited edition Vélosophy RE:CYCLE bike has been created for conscious-living coffee lovers and was designed with the intention of being an icon of circular economy design. Using the aluminum from recycled Nespresso capsules for the frame, Vélosophy re-imagined their classic model in bright purple in a nod to Nespresso’s popular Arpeggio coffee. Even the bell is capsule-shaped and the basket is also a cup-holder, giving the rider a chance to enjoy their favorite drink on the go.

As of August 12, only 1000 RE:CYCLE bikes will be available for purchase exclusively from Vélosophy’s e-commerce platform velosophy.cc, priced at €1290 plus shipping. As a bonus, for every bike they sell or rent out, another bike will be donated to a schoolgirl in Africa through World Bicycle Relief to improve her access to education.
So don’t forget to recycle your Nespresso aluminum capsules! The coffee company has a recycling scheme spread worldwide. It’s available in more than 53 countries and gives coffee-lovers a range of options for convenient recycling of their used capsules, from a network of more than 100,000 drop-off points to door-step collections and mail-back schemes.
