Ergonomic Mouse Overcomes Bad Hand Posture And Prevents Injury

People who work from home spend many hours sitting in the same position. Small changes to their choice of furniture and tech can help alleviate issues like shoulder strain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and the ‘texting thumb,’ which can all be aggravated by something as simple as a bad computer mouse.

While computer mice have advanced into a more ergonomic form of the traditional one (such as the Logitech MX Vertical), the market drastically lacks options. Somya Chowdhary and his team studied the human hand to design a conceptual computer mouse – dubbed MAUS – that overcomes its predecessors’ shortcomings.

The team mapped out all the pain points felt on the hand while using a non-ergonomic mouse. They then made a clay model of MAUS to better understand how its shape and angle would feel with grip and wrist movements. Once the final form was complete, prototypes were 3D printed.

The main body is clothed in Alacantara fabric for an ultra-soft touch and comfortable light grip, while the base features a soft felt and rubber grip for smooth motions. MAUS also features a digital display, which is a first for computer mice!

The team made all controls gesture-based to help cure repetitive strain syndrome. Having a computer mouse like this should help maintain a healthy balance while working at home. This past year, several inventors have come up with clever designs to alleviate pain and maintain a healthy life balance while working at home. Some of these include Fitwork – the office chair that lets you work and work out at the same time and BeYou – the transformative chair.
