Study Reveals Lack of Tree Diversity Hinders Climate Change Mitigation Efforts

Date:

The U.S. Forest Service’s sizable ambition to plant over a billion trees in the next nine years is under threat – not from lack of will or resources, but due to a shortage of adequate and diverse seedlings, according to researchers at the University of Vermont (UVM). This obstacle is complicating the federal government’s noble objective set under the REPLANT Act to combat the climate crisis by planting trees.

“Trees are this amazing natural solution to a lot of our challenges, including climate change,” lauded Professor Tony D’Amato, who co-led the research at the UVM Forestry Program. However, he lamented present limitations, noting that the variety and volume of seedlings necessary for significant reforestation are severely lacking.

The research team found that forest nurseries have a tendency to keep a limited inventory of a few tree species, such as those used in commercial timber production, rather than species necessary for ecological restoration, climate adaptation or conservation. They also discovered that, in many areas, no locally adapted trees were available.

Recent studies have underlined that carefully placed trees can reduce temperatures by as much as 25 degrees Fahrenheit compared to blacktop environments, contributing significantly to fighting urban heat islands that are worsening due to record heat waves. Yet, the pertinent challenge is not just about the quantity but also about the diversity of tree species.

A critical concern, as highlighted in the research titled “A lack of ecological diversity in forest nurseries limits the achievement of tree-planting objectives in response to global change,” is the widespread scarcity of seedlings from diverse species and varied “seed collection zones” – geographic areas conducive to the growth of specific tree species.

Using data from Cook-Patton et al. (2020), we used these criteria to quantify reforestation opportunities in the US. Datasets are referenced in parentheses where the year indicates the vintage of the data. Citations for these datasets are: LANDFIRE: (U. S. Department of the Interior Geological Survey, 2014); NAFD: (Goward et al., 2016); National Land Cover Dataset 2011: (Homer et al., 2015); TIGER: (US Census Bureau, 2017); Protected Area Database of the US (PAD-US): (U. S. Geological Survey Gap Analysis Project et al., 2018); gSSURGO: (Soil Survey Staff, 2016).

Forest nurseries, it appears, frequently prefer a limited inventory of commercially lucrative species over a diverse array necessary for ecological restoration or climate adaptation. This inclination is hampering our ability to counter global warming comprehensively. The importance of tree diversity cannot be overstated; each tree species, adapted to local climates
