If you put a lot of thought in your outfit for the day or find yourself stressed out because you basically tried on all of your clothes and you have no idea what you should wear or if any of it even looks good, you’re in luck. Now, researchers from The University of Texas at Austin, Cornell Tech, Georgia Tech, and Facebook AI Research have partnered up to design a smartphone application that tells you whether your outfit is fashionable or not.
This new fashion++ app utilizes artificial intelligence-based algorithms, which were trained using a database of over 10,000 images of outfits. These images came from fashion websites that people had publicly shared. Additionally, those algorithms were even able to visually identify factors such as the color, pattern, texture and shape of garments.
That’s not all, the researchers also included in the system some examples of what not to wear. They did this by creating composite outfits consisting of clashing elements that were cut and pasted from multiple photos. As a result, the app is capable of assessing the smartphone user’s outfit from a photo, then it makes suggestions such as selecting a longer jacket or a sleeveless top. Therefore, if you’re wearing a “do not” this app will guide you on the right path to a “do”.
This app is still in the making and could use many improvements. For example, the database is limited to clothes that were made prior to when the internet went into widespread use. Therefore, it doesn’t recognize vintage fashions such as the 80’s retro, groovy 70’s, or classic 40’s, which is a shame. It also mainly focuses on North American fashion, along with clothing worn by slim models. As the researchers develop this technology further they plan to address these issues.
U Texas’ Prof. Kristen Grauman, who led the research along with Kimberly Hsiao, said:
“We are examining the interaction between how a person’s body is shaped and how the clothing would suit them. We’re excited to broaden the applicability to people of all body sizes and shapes by doing this research.”
