Tilos

Tilos is the first island in the Mediterranean to go totally green, thanks to a project funded by the European Union that provides wind and solar energy power.

The scarcely populated island has transformed Tilos into the ultimate eco-friendly destination in the Dodecanese, a region already very popular because of its impressive natural scenery.

Additionally, the island’s cars are all-electric, and solar panels have been installed at prominent places to power tourism information boards.

Another noteworthy development is that more than 80% of the waste is now recycled, and the presence of a wide variety of herbs, flowers and numerous rare bird species has blossomed Tilos into an ecological haven.

Lefkada

The crystal clear waters of the Ionian Islands have drawn travellers from all parts of the world for hundreds of years, thanks to the plethora of calm coves and sheltered bays.

The Emerald Island of Lefkada, an extremely popular sailing hub, has launched a landmark project to harness the positive power of the sailing community to bring sustainability to the fore.

To protect the unique marine diversity from damage caused by these sailing vessels,a sustainable and eye-catching sailing guide has been put in place to provide practical tips to sailors to avoid harming the environment.

Sailors and crew,on their part, support the conservation effort by reporting sightings of whales, dolphins and other endangered wildlife to enable one and all to enjoy this stunning island in a sustainable way for generations to come.

Chalki

While all Greek islands are slowly but gradually turning green, the tiny island of Chalki in the Dodecanese has shown the way by embarking on a mission to ensure that the island’s energy production is entirely renewable.

The main facet of this Gr-Eco island initiative is to provide electric cars, a solar park, and a new solar-powered vessel for visitors to enjoy eco-friendly tours to all the scenic spots of Chalki, leaving behind nothing but footprints only on the sandy beaches.

At the same time, this sustainable practice will help to bring down electricity bills and upgrade the telecommunications infrastructure simultaneously, including a high-speed 5G network for its residents.

Chalki has become an excellent example of a successful public-private intervention that has made it the first Gr-Eco island, from installing solar PV systems to electrifying municipal fleets and greening the lighting system.

Alonissos

Alonissos, as a part of the Sporades island group, is also an important part of the Mediterranean ecosystem, especially since it’s the only favourable habitat for the monk seal, apart from other endemics who have found shelter here.

The municipality of Alonissos has totally eliminated the use of plastic bags. Tourists and residents are instead provided with paper bags in the shops, and there is also a campaign afoot to dole out reusable and cotton bags to customers for free.

A sustainable holiday in Alonissos involves diving to explore the underwater treasures of Alonissos Marine Park, a marine protected area of immense cultural and natural significance.

Apart from being the home of the endangered monk seal, the park is home to a variety of flora and fauna as well as many archaeological and historical monuments, well-preserved shipwrecks and churches dating back to the Byzantine Empire.

Amorgos

Among all the Greek islands, Amorgos has become the front-runner when it comes to preserving its unspoilt beauty and protecting the natural environment. Moreover, Amorgos has successfully encouraged residents to do organic farming, thereby reducing the use of harmful chemicals.

The islanders have been encouraged to source healthy local food products and emphasise the importance of sustainable agriculture methods, that in turn protect the soil, save water and biodiversity.

Amorgos also promotes eco-friendly accommodation options in its lodges and guesthouses to prioritise energy efficiency and waste reduction by adopting environmentally friendly practices.

The island is also the venue of an international documentary film festival that focuses on cultural and environmental topics in order to raise awareness about sustainability.

Remember, even small steps make a big difference and can be a great starting point for a sustainable holiday in Greece.

Crete

Steeped in myths and traditions passed on over centuries from one generation to the next, Crete offers visitors a fascinating eco-friendly experience through its traditional hospitality to learn more about the Cretan way of life.

A visit to the 15 acre Enagron eco farm which enjoys a prominent location amidst orchards, vineyards and olive trees educates visitors on organic and fertiliser free farming.

Hiking, birdwatching, participating in rituals, winemaking, and taking part in the production of the local spirit, raki, are all part of the Enagron experience.

Do not forget to visit the quaint fishing village of Agia Pelagia for a tour of the typical taverns to enjoy a fresh Cretan cuisine, known to enhance longevity by the locals.

Solar panels for hot water, ecological cleaning products, and low-consumption night bulbs are just a few of the many initiatives implemented by the Crete municipality to lower possible impact.

Andros

Lofty mountains and deep fertile valleys and crisscrossed by fast-flowing streams have made Andros one of the most diverse of all Greek islands and also the least crowded despite being the second largest island of the Cyclades.

Andros is also a paradise for hikers who converge here in large numbers to explore its century old villages and scramble up the rocky slopes where divers will find sprawling underwater meadows of swaying seagrass.

These striking Posidonia Meadows are endemic to the whole of the Mediterranean and play a vital part in filtering the sea water and limiting coastal erosion while at the same time fostering marine life.

The seagrass is said to absorb fifteen times more carbon dioxide than a similar-sized area of the Amazon rainforest. Recent measures have also been taken to raise awareness among yacht owners about the importance of seagrass and responsible anchoring of sailing ships in the region.

Visit the Greener Side of the Greek Islands

There are plenty of opportunities on the Greek islands to get involved in activities that will cause no harm to the environment. On your partner, it is important to make eco-friendly choices when it comes to accommodation, transport, and shopping.
