Dogs are one of the most intelligent, loyal domestic companions, and owners indeed form an inexplicable bond with them. So, what’s the point of robot dogs?
Samsung’s robot dogs will be a hybrid of a household assistant and a smart pet, with features such as security cameras while still acting sweet, like waking you up in the morning and bringing you the newspaper. Some benefits will include low maintenance – they won’t need any food, medical care, showers, and daily walks.
Designed by Gaetano De Cicco, the Samsung dog bot concept replaces the dog’s facial features with a screen. Instead of a confused head tilt, the robot’s screen face will display a question mark. Using a screen as an interactive face saves a lot of material versus using plastic-like materials to replicate a real dog face.
When the dog bot senses your arrival, it will be able to give you a leaping welcome – like a real dog – and it can even chase balls too. The design is futuristic, yet you can tell it was made to look like a dog when you look at it. The ‘tail’ is missing, making it look a bit like a dog from another planet.
Dogs are considered family to their owners. While technology can’t replace that bond, the robot dogs could still prove an excellent security system and friend. I could also imagine one of these bots being friends with a real dog, as they could play ball together.
Samsung also introduced some other robots at the event including Bot Handy, a robot that can help with household chores, Jetbot 90 AI+ smart vacuum cleaner, and Samsung Bot Care “robotic assistant and companion.”
