At the CES 2021, Samsung showed off a robot butler/assistant called Bot Handy. CES is the largest annual tech industry conference where companies come together and debut exciting and innovative technologies that aren’t ready to go on the market yet.
Bot Handy is currently “in development,” with no definitive price or sales date. The device uses “advanced AI” to “identify” objects by shape, size, and weight. The robot gets its “handy” name because it “helps you with work around the house.”
Samsung said:
Bot Handy uses AI to understand objects, like a glass cup or a ceramic plate, taking note of their shape and materials to work as your trusted partner. Bot handy can move around and do things like sets the table or put away groceries. It flips the script on what a robot in your home could look like.
Samsung introduced some other robots at that same event, including a surveillance robot dog to help keep you safe, Jetbot 90 AI+ smart vacuum cleaner with LiDAR tech and cameras to autonomously clean your home while avoiding objects such as cables, and Samsung Bot Care “robotic assistant and companion.” The Jetbot 90 AI+ will be available to purchase sooner than these other robots.
A single long arm with a mechanical hand at the end sets Bot Handy apart from the rest of Samsung’s robots, and it’s the only one that can pour a glass of wine. Bot Handy is black and white and has a screen for a face with eyes that change shape to express emotions.
Bot Handy uses an “appropriate amount of force, to grab and move around household items and objects,” Samsung points out. The robotic butler will be able to help with dirty laundry, dirty dishes, and even delicate tasks such as putting flowers in a vase.
