Tesla Model X and Porsche Taycan Earn 5 Star Safety Score

Date:

The European safety program, Euro NCAP, recently tested two new electric vehicles (EVs) and both received 5-star ratings and top safety scores in almost every subcategory.

The Tesla Model X received an overall score of 98% for adult occupant protection. The Model X was built to be one of the safest EVs ever. The battery technology, body, chassis, and restraints are specifically designed with safety in mind and have a very low probability of occupant injury.

Tesla’s Model X ended up scoring 94% in the Vulnerable Road Users category, which looks at pedestrian impact zones and automatic emergency braking. The ratings were similar for Child Occupant protection.
The Porsche Taycan also received 5-star ratings but came in just slightly lower than the Model X earning a score of 85% in Adult Occupant protection. Included in the 85% score are frontal-offset, lateral impact, and frontal full width. Taycan came in a bit lower offering only marginal protection against whiplash injury.

The Euro NCAP noted that the five-star rating applies to all current Taycan versions, including the 4S, and the more expensive Turbo and Turbo S. Testings were performed with both the 79.2kwh and the 93.4 kWh Performance Battery Plus.

Director of research at Thatcham Research and Euro NCAP board member, Matthew Avery, said:

The devil’s in the detail when you compare the Euro NCAP assessments of the Tesla Model X and Porsche Taycan. Both are safe cars, but the Tesla Model X is the stand-out. The car performed exceedingly well in most assessments of its safety technologies.

For consumers who are looking at buying an EV, they can feel safe choosing either one of these five star rated vehicles. That not only offer safety but are environmentally friendly as well.
