Around the world, car tires are left in piles, discarded on the side of the road, or somewhere near the garbage. Amarildo Silva, a 23-year-old Brazilian artist, is collecting these discarded, unwanted tires off the streets and turning them into adorable, cozy beds for animals.
Silva, based in Campina, Brazil, first got inspired to make recycled animal beds when he was walking on the streets and noticed how many stray dogs already used old tires as shelter. He thought about how the tire bed might make them feel more at home, resulting in a more comfortable feeling, and therefore, a better sleeping experience.
The artist started collecting old tires that he found on the streets, took them home, and put them all in his backyard. One of his rooms is dedicated just for storing these tires.
The transformation process is quite drastic, from an ugly old and dirty tire to a new, shiny, and colorful one. The artist starts the process by cleaning off each tire, cutting it, giving it a fresh coat of paint, and then installing a tiny mattress into the center. Silva loves to personalize the tires, giving them unique designs and writing the name of the animal that will own the bed.
It’s been two years since the young craftsman started selling the tire beds. His motivation to make the beds began because he wanted to clean up the streets in his city and to provide income for his family. As the beds grew popular, Silva started his own business called Cãominhas Pets and began marketing his creations on Instagram. Since then, he has sold over 500 beds. In addition to beds, he started turning the tires into beautiful flower pots and garden containers as well.
Silva strongly believes this project will contribute to a more sustainable world, and he plans to present more innovative ideas for generating a positive environmental impact. For now, when he isn’t cleaning up the streets of old tires, he’s mentoring students at local public schools and volunteering by helping abandoned animals.
