IKEA wants to contribute to a world without waste and enable people to make more sustainable choices. As a part of this ambition, all plastic used in the IKEA home furnishing range will be based on renewable or recycled material by 2030.
In 2018, the retailer removed plastic straws from all of its UK and Ireland stores. Last year it set the goal of phasing out single-use plastics such as straws, cutlery, cups, and plates, replacing them with disposable alternatives made from 100% renewable sources by 2020. In 2019, the company also started using compostable mushroom-based packaging for its products.
Now, IKEA has entered the sustainable tiny home market with an eco-friendly 187sq ft off-grid dwelling that’s packed with green features.
The retailer joined forces with Escape and Vox Creative on the IKEA Tiny Home Project. Escape, a company that builds tiny RV homes, constructed the trailer – a customized, upgraded version of its Vista Boho XL model. This version includes a composting toilet, solar panels, and an on-demand heated water supply powered by the trailer.
Inside the tiny home, interiors include white-washed sustainably-grown pine-paneled walls with IKEA’s energy-efficient appliances and sustainable furniture. Built-in storages are made from recycled bottle tops, along with Kitchen cupboards, furniture, a collapsible desk, and a table.
Vox Creative and IKEA have digitally recreated the IKEA BOHO XL model, which starts from $47,550, to allow viewers to take a virtual tour of the tiny home.
