New Rand E-Boat Offers High Speed And Long Range

Date:

Back in January 2018, Danish boat maker Rand first introduced its luxurious Leisure 28 Electric powerboat. This new sleek Scandinavian model goes farther and faster than previous electric boats by Rand.

The eco-friendly Leisure 28 Electric boat has an e-drive stern propulsion system that includes an “ultra-high efficiency permanent magnet” 240-kilowatt motor and modular lithium battery pack at 120 kilowatt-hours. The e-boat offers top speeds of 40 knots (72 km/h), 120 minutes of planning speed range per charge, or 140 nautical miles (roughly 260 km) if you take it cruising.

The powerboat is 844-cm (27.6-ft)-long, with a 259-cm/8.5-ft wide hull developed for stability. It’s designed for two but has enough seating for up to twelve people, and there’s a large table at the center that can be collapsed to form the space of a “king-sized” sun lounge.

The Leisure 28 Electric also features:

  • A touchscreen entertainment system at the helm
  • A built-in kitchen and bar in the cockpit
  • A bathing platform to the back of the boat
  • An indoor toilet
  • And, a sleeping quarters below the deck with a queen-sized bed

The best part of all, the electric propulsion ensures pleasant sails without a loud motor running and the smell of toxic gas while sailing. Rand said the E-boat is a viable alternative to fossil-fueled powerboats and that it sets a new standard for electric performance.

The Leisure 28 Electric will be an eco-friendly choice within the watersport boat-category, as it has been constructed using bio-based hybrid materials and recycled plastics. Rand expects the E-boats to be available in a few months for a starting price of €178,000 (about US$195k).

Electric and hydrogen boats are likely to become popular soon to meet emissions goals, especially since Toyota has adapted hydrogen fuel cells for maritime use, which could drastically increase the range of boats over lithium-ion batteries.
