Segway has put up its first smart e-bike, called eMoped C80, for pre-order on Indiegogo. The C80 is a mix between a sit-on scooter and an e-bike. As a bonus, Segway claims that riders won’t even need a license to drive it in most US states.
The eMoped features:
- A 750-W motor
- Top speeds of 20 mph (32 km/h)
- Twist-grip throttle
- Dual-braking system
- An auto cruise setting that maintains the desired speed
- Each grip ends include an LED indicator for at-a-glance, color-coded status verification
- An LED screen offers rider information such as remaining charge and speed
- Removable 48-V, 24-Ah, 1,152-Wh Li-ion battery
- A range of 52.8 miles (85 km) per charge
- A front fork and mid-spring suspension make for a smoother ride
- The LED headlight has both inner and outer ring lights
- An ambient light sensor powers the bike on when daylight starts to fade
- Finally, there’s a small cargo rack on the rear
The LED color-coded status verification on the grips consists of five different colors – orange; power on, blue; auto cruise activated, green; ready to go, red; error report, and green/red flashing; anti-theft alarm.
The eMoped C80 is equipped with premium front disc and rear drum brakes to ensure safety during sudden obstacles and regenerative braking to give energy back to the batteries when slowing down.
Segway has incorporated an intelligent system called the RideyGo! which includes:
- Smart seat detection that auto-locks the ride a few seconds after you get off
- Locking/unlocking the C80 by swiping an NFC tag over the LED screen
- An AirLock system that lets you unlock the bike using an app via a smartphone
The C80 has impressive anti-theft features, including a notification that gets sent to the user’s phone if there’s any irregular movement of their parked bike, while simultaneously triggering visual and audio alarms on the C80 and locking its wheels after 4 seconds. However, if the potential thief still manages to move the bike, the mobile app can track its location with the help of GPS.
The eMoped is currently on Indiego, where it’s offering a Launch Day Special discount price at US$1,899, with the retail price projected to be $2,199. Shipping is expected to begin in November.
