Scientists at UT Southwestern found that it’s possible to reverse aging-related heart damage by exercising regularly. However, you have to begin physical activity at least a few years before age 65 while the heart still retains plasticity and, thus, the ability to remodel itself. The ideal window of gaining later-life exercise-related heart elasticity is between 45 and 64.

Earlier research from the same team illustrated how a sedentary lifestyle stiffens the heart’s ventricular muscles. After years of inactivity, the muscles stiffen.

Senior author of the new study, Dr. Benjamin Levine, Director of the Institute and Professor of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern, explained in a press release:

“When the muscle stiffens, you get high pressure, and the heart chamber doesn’t fill as well with blood. In its most severe form, blood can back up into the lungs. That’s when heart failure develops.”

Fortunately, the two-year study found that keeping a regular workout routine four to five days a week can undo the damage caused by years of sedentary behavior. Although, anything less isn’t enough – meaning, exercising even only three days a week won’t cut it. The ideal regime consists of one to two strength training sessions, one high-intensity aerobic exercise session, and one or two moderately intense sessions. The moderate and high-intensity sessions should leave you short of breath and sweating.

Dr. Levine concluded:

“Based on a series of studies performed by our team over the past five years, this ‘dose’ of exercise has become my prescription for life. I think people should be able to do this as part of their personal hygiene – just like brushing your teeth and taking a shower.”

The study participants showed an 18% improvement in maximum oxygen intake during exercise by the end of the two years. They also showed an over 25% improvement in compliance (elasticity) of the left ventricular heart muscle. Dr. Levine said the difference is like comparing a new, stretchy rubber band with one that has gotten stiff sitting unused on the shelf.

HITT Helps Diabetics

A separate study found that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) – even just 20-minute sessions, three days a week – can improve and help maintain good health. This team of scientists found that low-volume HIIT exercise delivers comparable, or sometimes superior, improved arterial health, heart function, and metabolic health. The training improved liver fat, blood sugar levels, and cardiorespiratory fitness in type 2 diabetics.

Exercise and Diet Together Do It Better.

Another study focused on diabetes found that exercise plus a healthy diet reverses diabetes. Just over 60% of the participants were no longer considered diabetic by the end of the intervention.

Prof. Shahrad Taheri, the study’s lead author, said:

“I think it’s a real game-changer for the management of type 2 diabetes. It shows that if you lose weight early enough in the disease process, you can actually reverse the disease and thus avoid all the other health issues and quality of life reductions that come with it. So we’re hoping that studies such as these can bring about a big change in the clinical approach to type 2 diabetes across the world – so that we will combine early screening with lifestyle interventions essentially to get rid of this condition straight away, instead of putting people on multiple medications for life.”

Furthermore, exercise plus green tea extract extends the benefits further by tackling fatty liver disease. A different study found that mice fed a high-fat diet and the tea extract had 75% fewer lipid deposits in their livers than those of the control group.

Exercise Prevents Age-Related Vision Loss

Research from the University of Virginia School of Medicine offers experimental evidence that working out can prevent or slow down the development of macular degeneration. In addition, it may benefit other common vision loss causes like diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.

Bradley Gelfand, a researcher who worked on the new study and is a self-described couch potato, said while admitting a secret motivation for the research:

Thomas Rando, director of Stanford University’s Glenn Center for the Biology of Aging and professor of neurology and neurological sciences, said:

“Studies conducted by us and others have shown that tissue regeneration decreases with age and that this is due to declining function in adult stem cells. The animals were exercising at the intensity levels at which they were comfortable, much like what people do for their health. The effect on old animals is very significant. We found that regular exercise restores youthfulness to tissue repair. Their muscle stem cells start to look and behave like those of much younger animals.

After three weeks of nightly aerobics, the older animals were significantly better at repairing muscle damage than those who did not exercise.

Next, the scientists injected blood from older exercising mice into older non-exercising mice and found it conjured a similar benefit. Therefore, they suspect that exercise gives rise to factors that circulate in the blood, helping rejuvenate aged stem cells.
