When you put wheels and motors on things, people will want to race them, and with electric scooters becoming more common in modern cities, it was only a matter of time before people started racing those too.
The Electric Scooter Championship (eSC) is the world’s first international electric scooter race series. The championship will involve Professional eSC teams and riders racing custom-built, high-speed electric scooters that reach speeds up to 100km/h (60mph) in the heart of major cities. The ESC organizers aim to make international motorsport more sustainable, accessible, and affordable than ever before.
The eSC has partnered with a “recognized high-technology provider” who will design and build the first race scooters, with prototypes to be revealed later this year. One of the scooters that may be involved in the race includes the Rion2 RE90 Racing Edition, which is equipped with a full carbon body and dual motors. The Rion2 reaches speeds of up to 160 km/h (100 mph). One of these scooters cost US$6,800.
The eSkootr Championship series is co-founded by motorsport entrepreneur CEO Hrag Sarkissian and A1GP driver COO Khalil Beschir. The business is also supported by Formula E racer and UN Environment Global Ambassador Lucas di Grassi, and former F1 driver Alex Wurz, the eSC Safety Ambassador.

The competition’s first season will launch at “a series of specially designed urban venues in some of the world’s most cosmopolitan and progressive cities” in 2021.
