The UK set a new renewable energy record this past Sunday when they went over the 16GW mark for the first time. The previous record of 15.32GW was set back in February this year.
Offshore and onshore wind accounted for more than 43.7% of the power generated, hitting 16.162GW. This number was more than double the amount of nuclear energy produced, which was at 20.5%.
The numbers for the remainder of energy produced are as follows: Gas provided 12.8%, biomass 7.9%, imports 7.4%, coal 3.1%, hydro, 1.7%, solar 1.3%, storage 1.1% and other sources 0.5%.
This certainly gives the UK and the world something to look forward to, as it shows that we can power the planet and reduce CO2 emissions. The UK also has plans in the works for a massive upgrade to the country’s renewable energy storage in 2020.
I recently wrote an article talking about air pollution and just how much of a negative impact it has on human health. Our planet, humans, animals, plants, everyone is affected by air quality and CO2 emissions. Any way that we can cut down on emissions and provide clean energy needs to be further investigated and implemented.
Research now backs up what scientists have been warning us about for decades, we simply cannot keep polluting the planet. This data coming out of the UK gives us hope that maybe we still have time to turn this massive problem around. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has also reported that renewables are expected to increase by 50% by 2024.
It will, however, take a collective effort by everyone. This is not something that we can just leave up to politicians. They have failed many times in having the greater good of the planet in mind. Please, keep paying attention and realize that absolutely nothing is more important for all life on this planet. We need to continue to reduce emissions on all levels.
