Denmark’s transmission system operator Energinet has shared some amazing news about the country’s powers supply – on September 15, wind power supplied more than all of its electricity needs for the first time ever. The technology generated enough electricity to cover 130% of the country’s demand!
Energinet’s preliminary figures show that high winds from midnight to midnight of the 15th helped deliver the surplus of clean energy to the country. The surplus power was sold to other countries. Between 2am and 3am the wind turbines were generating so much electricity is reached a point of 60% more power than was needed!
Energinet energy strategic advisor Carsten Vittrup said:
Just 10 years ago, winds only filled about one-fifth of our supply, so things have gone insanely strong when we have not just hours, but 24 hours where wind turbines produce more electricity than we need.
Denmark is known for being a world leading country in wind energy production and wind turbine production. Even back in 2014 the country was already producing 57.4% of its net electricity generation from renewable energy sources.
The country has ambitious renewable energy goals for the future. The government is planning for 100% of Denmark’s heat and electricity demands to be powered by renewable energy by 2035; and for the entire energy supply – electricity, heat, industry and transportation – to be coming from renewable energy sources by 2050.
