A French company, BeauEr, has designed and manufactured an expandable camper that triples in size in just 60 seconds. The trailer starts at 43 square feet, and with the push of a button, the nesting layers slide on telescopic modules to expand into a 129-square-foot living space.
BeauEr’s designers took inspiration from the small, curvy vintage caravans of the 1960s like the Baillou B3, Georges et Jacques, Escargot, and Bourreau Sologne. They took the classic concept of the retro travel trailer and modernized it with living spaces similar to those in a traditional home. However, unlike vintage campers, the French caravan is static, and the areas overlap.
The camper is easily towable by most vehicles because it’s made from lightweight materials, including aluminum, polyester, and polystyrene. As a bonus, the interior finishes are made from high-pressure laminates for durability and aesthetics.
The BeauEr 3x prototype built-in 2011 is on display at the Hymer Museum, which is dedicated to the history of camper vans, motorhomes, and caravans. Today, the camper is no longer a concept and is available all around the world, including Canada, Europe, China, Korea, and soon in the U.S and Australia.
The basic model for the 3x camper retails for $33,250. An upgraded version with a shower, dry toilet, living room sofa bed, blackout curtains, air conditioning, heaters, solar panels, battery-monitoring smartphone app, would cost around $50,000.
For those who need more space, BeauEr’s larger 3XPLUS camper would be a better option because it has two or three bedrooms, a kitchen, bathroom, and a living room. Retailing for the 3XPLUS starts from $66,615 for the basic model to almost $80,000 for the upgraded version, and it expands from 118 square feet to 300 square feet.
The French company also offers a 2X model that doubles in size, for those who need less space. The 2X camper with roughly 90 square feet of living space starts at $25,466.
BeauEr is currently working on a new concept for 2020 called Van-X, which is equipped with a slide-out module that expands into a bedroom.
