The study focused on the brain’s default mode network (DMN), which is involved in memory and internal thought processes. The fMRI results showed that after exposure to diesel exhaust, participants exhibited a significant decrease in functional connectivity within the DMN compared to when exposed to filtered air.

Reducing diesel emissions is crucial for protecting public health. Governments and businesses can take several steps to reduce emissions from diesel engines. First, governments can set and enforce strict emissions standards for diesel engines. In the European Union, for example, some regulations limit the amount of PM and NOx diesel engines emit. These regulations have been effective in reducing emissions from diesel engines.

Second, businesses can invest in cleaner technologies, such as electric or hybrid vehicles, which produce fewer emissions than diesel engines. Many companies are already doing this, recognising that investing in clean technologies is good for the environment and their business.

Finally, individuals can take action to reduce their exposure to diesel emissions. This can include walking, cycling, or taking public transportation instead of driving a car. It can also involve living in areas with less traffic or using air purifiers in their homes.
