In an exciting video captioned “this man is living in 2030,” that went viral on Twitter, with over 1.8 million views, a person is seen zipping along a public road, looking like Marty McFly from Back to the Future.
As it turns out, the video isn’t a fake-out. Instead, it’s probable the stunt broke several laws, but at least the drone rider is wearing a helmet while riding on top of what looks like a high-powered drone with eight propellers; an octocopter.
Hunter Kowald, the hoverboard aircraft developer, calls his aircraft ‘The Skysurfer’ and claims it to be the world’s most miniature and most powerful hovercraft. However, the SkySurfer Aircraft has a total flight time of only 20 minutes, and pricing starts at roughly $85,000.
The incredible flying contraption is also sold by Omni Hoverboards, a company specializing in propeller-based hoverboards, with costs likely starting at $20,000. However, it’s unlikely that it will be available to the public market any time soon.
Several other videos online demonstrate what the drone “hoverboard” is capable of and how it works. For example, one video shows a man soaring above the treetops above a countryside pond (as seen below).
Omni Hoverboards website claims it’s “the first real hoverboard.” According to the Guinness World Records, its inventor Catalin Alexandru Duru broke the world record for the longest hoverboard flight in 2015.
In 2014, Hendo board developed a hoverboard that used electromagnetic technology based on the same principles as a Maglev train. This means that the board could only hover above certain non-ferrous metal surfaces such as aluminum or copper. Fast-forward to the future; people are flying around city streets in hoverboard aircraft.
