Sailing Towards a Sustainable Future: The Longest-Range Electric Hydrofoil Boat

Date:

As global efforts to combat climate change intensify, the marine sector is also riding the wave forward with innovation in renewable energy and sustainability. The SpiritBARTech35EF, a collaboration between Spirit Yachts and BAR Technologies, is setting new standards for electric boats, offering a unique blend of design, sustainability, and extraordinary range.

Electric boats have traditionally had to weigh up two methods to enhance range: installing massive batteries or adopting a hydrofoil system to decrease energy-consumptive drag. The SpiritBARTech35EF nimbly navigates between both solutions to offer an impressive range unseen in electric boats before now. While the “Powered by Polestar” edition C-8 from Candela offered a range of 57 nautical miles (66 miles/106 km), the SpiritBARTech35EF breaks records with an extraordinary range of 100 nautical miles (115 miles/185 km) thanks to its massive 120kWh custom battery pack.

Advanced design is a core element of this boat. The yacht employs foiling technology, which helps raise the hull out of the water, subsequently reducing drag by up to 75 percent, vastly extending its range. What makes this system even more compelling is that it cuts back on energy wastage; industry experts predict that without such innovations, decarbonizing the marine sector would be immensely challenging.

Underneath the shell of the SpiritBARTech35EF is an advanced propulsion system. The bespoke powertrain supplied by Equipmake, a UK-based company specializing in highly efficient electric motors, is based on the lightweight, high-performance HPM-400 model, which offers an output of 80 kW (107 hp). Equipmake’s reliable inverter, the HPI-450 IGBT, and the firm’s proprietary 120kWh battery pack further support the powertrain.

The SpiritBARTech35EF is more than just a boat — it’s shown the potential advancements in the marine sector. It has received praise for its revolutionary blend of futuristic technology and sustainable design. Crafted with an amalgamation of titanium and cold-molded wood reinforced by a carbon fiber shell, this vessel reduces its weight to just a ton.

John Cooper, CEO of BAR Technologies, expresses that the SpiritBARTech35EF is just the beginning of a series of green vessels aiming to redefine the world of leisure yachts. Meanwhile, Equipmake is making its first promising venture into the marine sector, hoping to contribute to the booming electric marine market, projected to reach $16.6 billion by the end of this decade.

The boat signifies a major step forward in the quest to produce sustainable and efficient vessels. As innovations like the SpiritBARTech35EF continue to define this sector’s future, the boundaries of renewable energy in the marine industry are sure to be pushed even further.
