Have you ever wished you could control your electrical outlets in your home? San Francisco-based start-up company Span.IO has just partnered up with LG to offer a product that does just that.
The new customizable backup provides the homeowner with intuitive energy monitoring and control from Span and combines that with LG Chem’s RESU10H home battery solution that is capable of storing up to 9.8kWh of usable energy.

Arch Rao is the founder and CEO of Span and former Tesla Chief of Energy Storage. He aimed to create a system that would connect the homeowner to their energy supply system and offer them the ability to control it. Rao recently commented on the new partnership with LG:
We are excited to partner with LG Chem to provide a fundamentally superior backup power solution to the market – one that puts [the] control in the hands of the customer. This is important for customers who are choosing clean energy alongside more intelligent and connected homes, and it’s especially important for people who are facing power outages.
He goes on to talk about Span’s customization, stating; [this is] “a meaningful step up from the present generation of storage offerings.” And, they set themselves apart from current systems, by allowing the homeowner the ability to “dynamically manage that storage.”

The Span Panel and the LG RESU Energy Storage system enable the homeowner unprecedented control over their electric consumption. This is not only helpful during power outages, but in general, having the ability to see power usage, control it, and save money.
The system can be controlled via a smartphone app where you can control up to 32 household circuits. The app also features your home’s energy power consumption, grid power consumption, the battery’s charge level, and solar production.
Jeongjin Hong, Vice President of LG Chem’s home battery business also commented on the new partnership:
The Span and LG pairing is a smart decision when you are considering investing in a home battery. The ability to choose how you power your home is critical during an outage. The LG home battery is a reliable power source and with Span, you can wisely spend your battery backup power.

In areas like California where they have become more subject to public safety power shutoffs (PSPS), this technology is especially useful. Homeowners can easily make sure appliances like the refrigerator stay powered even during these PSPS outages.
LG Chem’s Director of Residential Energy Storage Sales, Linh Tran, spoke last week about the benefits this type of system can bring to the customer:
If they’re in the middle of an emergency situation…they’re going to want to know how much battery they’ve got left” relative to the loads they must keep on for the blackout’s duration. We don’t give their answer to the homeowner today. You should know where every electron goes in your home now that you’re generating and storing power under your roof.
The Span/LG Customizable Backup Power was originally introduced in the California and Hawaii markets and is now available through both companies’ install networks.
