Plastic stays in the ecosystem for decades, harming thousands of sea and land creatures daily. According to the UN’s fact sheet on Marine pollution, plastic waste kills 1M seabirds and 100K sea mammals, marine turtles, and uncountable fish every year.
There are plenty of creative ways to help reduce plastic waste, including re-purposing plastic bottles into valuable household items. Below is an excellent DIY project on making a broom from PET bottles.

How To Make A Broom Out of PET Plastic Bottles
You will need:
- 18 plastic bottles per broom (depending on size)
- A pair of scissors
- Wire
- A cutter
- A hammer

Instructions:
- Cut the bottom of the bottle.
- Cut the bottle into thin strips up to the mouth.
- Repeat this to 17 bottles without the mouth.
- Once all the bottles are ready: Insert them all into the bottle that you left the mouth on.
- You can reinforce the broom by adding another mouth on the bottle’s mouth to ensure durability in the hooking area.
- Drill two holes and insert the wire through all the layers of bottles.
- Secure the broomstick with a nail.
- Finally, your broom is ready for sweeping!
