Upcycling is when an item gets transformed into something new that would otherwise end up in the trash. Recently, Designer Brent Walter made one of the most creative and adorable examples of upcycling. He used the fenders from an old Volkswagen Beetle to make a whole new style of transport, a scooter. The designer called the minibikes “Volkspod.”
Volkspod Features

This unique line of little scooters plays with the classic curves of the VW bug. The bikes have a 79cc engine, which promises to be as dynamic as the original Type 1 Bug. Walter reinforces the VW Beetle’s vintage vibe by using the original colors of the VW Beetle. The designer has currently only built two of these mini bikes; one is pastel blue and the other pistachio green.
Vintage fenders form the bulbous head and tail-light system as one piece. An oversized headlight fitted at the front of the bike makes them look like a cyclops on wheels, while a Schwinn seat and wide handlebars give it a bicycle feel. Emblazoned on each scooter is the VW logo. Did you know that VW Beetles had the trunk in their front and the engine in the back?

How Did Walter Think Of The Name ‘Volkspod’?
Walker used an original Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle and cut out the fenders from each corner of the car. He used the cut-out fender pieces to build the scooters. These fenders are rounded and pod-shaped, so he named the bike Volkspod.
Walter started the project in his garage and has shared every step of the work on Instagram. Below, are a few photos of his work in progress.

Iconic Status
VW Bugs have previously been transformed into something new, which isn’t surprising given their iconic status. Their bulbous design has been an inspiration since they began producing in mass quantities at the end of World War 2 up until 2003 when they went out of production. Today, that inspiration continues through Volkspods.
