Home Garden is a smart indoor herb garden with self-monitoring technology that’s built into your kitchen cabinet to free up counter space.
Some folks are better at gardening than others. So, for those of us who don’t have a green thumb but enjoy having fresh herbs to add to our meals (who doesn’t!), there’s Igor Abakumov’s Home Garden system that takes care of itself.
The second drawback of standard indoor gardening is having several small pots taking up counter space near a window. Igor’s invention solves that problem, too – it’s designed to fit in the cupboard. The system is integrated right into the kitchen counter and slides out to reveal ample area for growing greens within. It’s essentially an herb drawer built into the kitchen.
You can have a clear countertop to work on and open the drawer to retrieve whatever fresh ingredients you need on the spot. The Home Garden gives you access to fresh greens 365 days a year and takes care of all the minor inconveniences that accompany growing and taking care of thriving plants.
It’s compact, invisible, and fantastic for small urban apartments and big suburban houses alike. Its connected design (an integrated intelligent system) allows users to monitor its functioning, including receiving a reading of moisture and temperature levels via smartphone. The system even monitors the freshness of plants and their readiness for use. If any one of the levels is off, it can be adjusted directly from the phone.
Designer Abakumov drew inspiration from his personal experience. He explained:
“My mom is a real culinary virtuoso, and she often complains about the lack of specific greens in the store. And then I got the idea to design a home garden that will be built into the kitchen and will delight with greenery all year round.”
Home Garden is one of the James Dyson Awards 2021 entries.
Abakumov said that he hopes to cooperate with kitchen manufacturers eventually.
